The Engineering and Industrial Professions Department at the University of North Alabama (http://www.una.edu/eip/) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in Engineering Technology, with primary teaching responsibilities in the Occupational & Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) concentration. The appointment begins in Fall 2026. Review of applications will begin on November 3, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled.
The BSET-OEHS concentration is designated as a Qualified Academic Program (QAP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and supported by a NIOSH Training Project Grant. The successful candidate will teach OEHS courses (e.g., occupational safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, physical agents, hazardous materials, environmental regulations), advise students, engage in scholarly activity, and contribute to ABET accreditation and industry partnerships.
UNA is located in the vibrant Florence/Muscle Shoals region, which offers a moderate climate, numerous cultural opportunities, and a high quality of life. The department is housed in the 162,000-square-foot Mitchell M. Burford Science and Technology Building, with state-of-the-art office, classroom, and laboratory facilities.
The region’s strong base of industrial and manufacturing operations provides rich opportunities for collaboration and applied learning. The successful candidate will be expected to leverage this environment by enhancing the Engineering Technology curriculum, particularly in the OEHS concentration, to support workforce and industry needs. As part of an industry-focused program, the candidate will also be expected to build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with regional employers and contribute to the development of new curricular opportunities as departmental and industry needs evolve.
Essential Job Duties:
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Teach courses in the OEHS concentration related to (but not limited to) ergonomics, safety/environmental regulations, physical agents, hazardous materials, and industrial hygiene;
- Develop new courses and applied learning experiences as program needs evolve;
- Maintain and enhance laboratory facilities associated with OEHS;
- Recruit, advise, and mentor students in Engineering Technology;
- Engage in scholarly activity related to occupational and environmental health and safety;
- Participate in university, college, department, and professional service;
- Support the department’s ongoing ABET accreditation processes;
- Develop and maintain relationships with regional industries to support applied learning and workforce development.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administration, and industry partners in written, verbal, and interpersonal forms;
- Experience working with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders;
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
- Desire and ability to teach a varied and evolving curriculum;
- Ability to plan and perform hands-on development of laboratory equipment and exercises.

Requirements
A PhD in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Safety Sciences/Safety Engineering, Environmental/Industrial Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required; a minimum of five years of industry experience in occupational and environmental health and safety is required; and relevant professional certifications (CIH, CSP, CHMM) are preferred.
