The Success Coaching Program within Academic Advising, a new initiative of Johns Hopkins University, was created with the intention to fully support first-generation limited-income (FLI) students. By providing intensive success coaching using an appreciative, strengths-based advising model, staff in the hybrid role of advisor/coach advisors support students to increase retention, completion, engagement, satisfaction, and social mobility. The Director of the Success Coaching Program is responsible for the leadership, vision and strategic direction of this program, meeting and reporting the goals and outcomes of program and the direct supervision of the advising/coaching team. The Director also carries a small caseload of advisees, functioning as their academic advisor of record and success coach throughout their undergraduate experience. The Director reports primarily to the Executive Director of Student Success and secondarily to the Assistant Deans of Academic Advising in KSAS and WSE.

Essential Job Functions:
Supervise a team of full-time professional staff members who are embedded in more than one location and have dual accountability.
Develop annual budgets and work closely with the Bloomberg budget analyst to monitor accounts associated with the advising/coaching program.
Align financial and human resources with priorities.
In collaboration with campus partners, develop and manage a coordinated recruitment plan with other FLI-focused programs on campus to ensure that the university is matching FLI students with appropriate opportunities and to create consistent, affirmative messaging about those opportunities.
Strategic Planning and Assessment
Cultivate and promote a long-range vision and mission of the advising/coaching program aligned with the principles of the FLI Initiative and JHU’s academic mission.
Provide leadership and direction in the development and implementation of assessment strategies to collect, manage and report data related to the metrics of the FLI Initiative.
Evaluate program results and make changes as needed to reach desired program and student outcomes.
Keep abreast of national trends in higher education and remain current in the field of retention and student success.
Collaborate with faculty, staff and students to develop programs, services or opportunities to support the success of FLI students.
Collaborate with the Assistant Deans of the Whiting School of Engineering and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences to ensure proper training and implement strategies to enhance the academic success and well-being of FLI students.
Collaborate with the Director of Student Enrichment Programs and the leads of Hop-In and JUMP to ensure coordination and shared purpose between FLI advising within those programs and FLI advising embedded in the Offices of Academic Advising.
Work closely with key campus partners (Life Design Lab, Financial Aid, Student Life, Residential Life, Student Outreach & Support) to ensure that all advisors/coaches function effectively in connecting advisees to campus resources and advisees participate in high-impact learning experiences, such as undergraduate research, internships, and service learning.
Participate on university (school-based) and Homewood Student Affairs committees.
Provide leadership in the development of programmatic advisory committees (both staff and student).
Advising & Success Coaching
Help students navigate their academic experience by assisting with proactive academic planning, creative problem solving, and connection to academic resources. In particular:
Assist undergraduates with course registration, academic strategies, selecting majors and minors, and developing post-graduation plans.
Advise undergraduates on academic opportunities and requirements, policies and procedures.
Provide early interventions to identify and communicate with “at-risk” students identified by faculty in each academic term.
Support the success of FLI students by providing year-round proactive coaching and guidance throughout their undergraduate careers that address self-care, socio-emotional well-being, career-related issues including major choice, internships, full-time employment, graduate school opportunities, and other post baccalaureate positions.
Proactively monitor student progress and performance, analyze problem areas, forecast solutions and conduct intervention strategies.
Track advisees’ progress via OnBase and Starfish systems.

Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling or related fields including social science is required.
Five to seven years of experience leading, implementing, managing programs of similar complexity required.
Significant experience supervising staff required. One unique feature of this position is that program staff are embedded in different locations are accountable to two divisions of the university.
