The Center for Adolescent Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is one of 26 Prevention Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. We are committed to assisting urban youth in becoming healthy and productive adults. Together with community partners, the Center conducts research that identifies the needs and strengths of young people and tests programs designed to promote the health and well-being of young people.
The Center for Adolescent Health is seeking a Communications Specialist to develop and implement communications strategies and prepare materials that enhance the visibility and understanding of the research done at the Center for Adolescent Health. He/she will assist in planning and implementing publicity campaigns for Center products and events. Develop the layout design of Center reports, policy brief factsheets, etc. The Communications. Specialist will create content for social networking sites and disseminate information about the Center on social media platforms. The Communications Specialist will work with Public Affairs to maintain and regularly update the Center's web site.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities Disseminate information about the Center on social media platforms and website
Create content for social networking sites and website
Develop and implement communications strategies and prepare materials that enhance the visibility and understanding of the research done at the Center, both print and digital
Serve as liaison with Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Public Affairs office
Works with Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Public Affairs (PA) to maintain Center web site
Develops the layout design of Center reports, policy briefs, fact sheets, etc.
Report and keep track of Center's products and publications
Staff the Center's Communication Core and assist with the Dissemination core Internal/external contacts required as part of the job Work with Center Faculty and Staff as well as Community Partners Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma/GED. Two (2) years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. * Preferred Qualifications BA in English, Journalism, Marketing, advertising, mass communication, advocacy or other relevant, discipline, or its equivalent. Two (2) years related experience.
Previous experience working on communication strategies and materials relating to health and/or youth issues for multiple audiences preferred. Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Interest and experience working with academic researchers, community organizations, and policy makers. Excellent communication skills, both writing and speaking. Familiarity with computer programs that produce polished web pages, newsletters and/or presentations. Familiarity with writing guidelines,-"Associated Press, American Psychological Association.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
