The Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology (NST) focuses on the metabolic biology of nutrients and toxicants in relation to human health and disease.
Our research and curriculum span a breadth of topics, from the delivery of nutrients to mammalian cells and their molecular functions, through the influence of genetics on diet-associated human disease, to programs and policies that address human and environmental health and safety.
The Napoli lab studies regulation of the metabolon that generates the autocoid all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA) from retinol (vitamin A), and the function of atRA in in modulating intermediary metabolism (energy balance), diabesity, adipogenesis, bone health (osteoporosis) and blood glucose control. We use a combination of analytical chemistry, bioimaging, biochemistry and molecular and cell biology to determine the physiological effects of atRA.
Mouse colony maintenance:
Breeding mice fed a special diet
Injecting mice with drugs
Tissue sectioning and microscopy
Molecular and Biochemical techniques
Data analyses and presentation
Other duties as assigned
Experience with standard research techniques, such as pipeting and handling mice.

At least one year of lab experience (can be as part-time student assistant).
BS or in science (biochemistry, chemistry or nutrition) or equivalent experience/knowledge.
