General summary/purpose: The research technologist will work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor. He/she requires working knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques, and terminology. The research technologist will be responsible for day-to-day operations of a small clinical laboratory that complies with College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines, and will also perform laboratory research.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
Follow established procedures or protocols and utilize aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests of immune function for the CAP-compliant Pediatric Immunology Laboratory. Tests may include use of basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, western blots, ELISA assays, and other specialized biological science techniques.
Maintain records, perform quality control experiments, assist in preparation of clinical laboratory reports, and bill tests through Patient Data Systems (PDS).
As needed, develop new protocols and procedures to be used in the clinical laboratory. New protocols to be developed include:
Radial Immunodiffusion (RID) assay to measure ng/mL levels of IgA.
Creation of EBV-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines from clinical specimens.
Western blot assay to detect ATM protein in lymphoblastoid cell lines.
Protein phosphorylation assay to detect enzymatic activity of ATM in lymphoblastoid cell lines.
Process blood to encapsulate drugs into red blood cells for infusion into patients in a clinical trial.
Maintain a working knowledge of the theory behind experiments and apply basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.
Collect data and monitor data quality and accuracy as required by clinical and research protocols.
Maintain appropriate documentation of clinical and research results, as required. Recommend revisions to experimental methods based upon observations of the data.
Monitor inventory levels, order material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, and count orders upon receipt.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required.
Preferred qualifications: Some post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project, not related to normal course requirements preferred.
