This full-time Personal and Career Counselor is a licensed professional counselor responsible for providing short-term counseling and referral for issues related to academic performance, career exploration and decision making, crisis intervention, self-help resources, and outreach activities for students; outreach and consultation to faculty and staff; and liaison to county and community services.
Under the direction of the Coordinator, Personal and Career Counseling provide short-term counseling and referral services for students experiencing developmental and/or emotional problems affecting academic performance. Make referrals as necessary.
Coach and/or counsel students as to their career aspirations and in establishing career goals, focusing on the definition of the worker role and how that role interacts with other life roles.
Assist General Exploration students in exploring and declaring the AACC program(s) that will best prepare them for their chosen occupation.
Provide crisis intervention services for students and referral to county crisis units as needed.
Follow established procedures regarding student mental health emergencies.
Provide outreach and consultation to faculty and staff regarding mental health services available to students.
Maintain relationships with Anne Arundel County and community mental health agencies.
Contribute to the content of the AACC Web site as to career exploration and personal counseling.
Develop an educational student outreach program to include resources, special events, student activities and workshops on wellness and prevention and career exploration.
Follow procedures by maintaining counseling notes as appropriate, maintain aggregate data for reporting purposes, contribute to the weekly report, attend staff meetings and training sessions, participate in and serve on appropriate committees to support personal counseling and career exploration.
Follow best practices as determined by professional associations and rules pertaining to confidentiality as prescribed by law and ethical guidelines.
Continue professional development to enhance services and maintain license; provide a copy of license at time of renewal.
Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator and/or Dean.
Master’s degree in counseling required.
A license from the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as either a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical or a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor is required.
Knowledge of personality, student development, and career development theories.
Knowledge of individual and group counseling competencies and legal and ethical practices.
Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, ability to master student information systems.
Ability to work at all AACC locations during regular operating hours.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all student groups, faculty, administrators, professional and support staff, and the public.
Three years’ experience in a combination of academic and/or personal counseling in an academic setting preferred.
Advising experience in post-secondary community college setting preferred.
