![]() Sr. Safety Engineer Stanford University Senior Safety Engineer Exempt- Full-time The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) supports and advances the teaching, learning, and research activities of Stanford University by providing and coordinating programs and services that foster a safe and healthy campus community. We are currently seeking an experienced safety engineer to take a leadership role in Stanford's safety risk mitigation with high hazard operations and activities. This position serves as the campus subject matter expert in the field of safety engineering, including but not limited to applications such as electrical work, slip/trip/fall prevention, shop safety, and high pressure systems. This expert takes a key role in advancing the University's safety culture across academic, research, and operational units by supporting effective hazard assessment and control, safety education/ training, incident investigation and facility design review. Job Code: 4383 Job Grade: K JOB PURPOSE: Under minimal supervision, the Senior Safety Engineer performs the most complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements. CORE DUTIES*: Working under consultative or self-initiated direction, the Senior Safety Engineer supports programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Act as a lead technical expert, providing functional direction, consultation to leadership and appropriate levels of training in the overall application of safety and associated programs that control risk across University operations. Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the wide variety of University environments. Recommend and implement improvements in management systems, operational processes, facilities design, operating procedures and equipment to minimize hazards and potential loss. Investigate incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions. Based upon investigation findings, technical and risk analysis, develop and disseminate lessons learned to affected parties Based upon investigation findings, provide risk reduction options to leadership including cost/benefit analysis. May lead or supervise a team responsible for developing and implementing health and safety programs. Provide support as needed during University emergencies. * Other duties may also be assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in a scientific or allied field and five to ten years of progressively responsible experience in the occupational safety and health field. Preferred: Master's or terminal degree in engineering sciences or related disciplines. Certified Safety Professional (CSP, Board of Certified Safety Professionals). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong knowledge of physical safety hazards relevant to skilled trades and research activities, with safety proficiency in areas including but not limited to electrical work, pressure systems, shop equipment use, fall prevention/protection, and confined space entry. Expertise in safety management fundamentals such as quantitative/ qualitative risk assessment, job safety analysis, incident investigation, training and risk communication, and building design review. Demonstrated ability to develop metrics that effectively communicate safety management progress, and cost versus benefit, to University leadership. Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies. Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s). Demonstrated mentoring/coaching expertise of staff on safety topics. Other Required Skills - The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following: Exceptional customer service skills, including strong interpersonal skills, such as empathy for and patience with those who need help with their working conditions Ability to work successfully independently with minimal supervision, as a member of multiple teams, and as a team lead Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to present information clearly and succinctly verbally, in writing, and in presentations. Project and group facilitation skills Strong self-motivation; proactive, high-energy, enthusiastic, can do work ethic; ability to handle potentially stressful situations. Excellent organizational skills, as demonstrated by the ability to manage competing priorities efficiently and to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment. Ability to tolerate ambiguity with patience and good will Excellent attention to detail and thoroughness in accomplishing assigned tasks; pride in performing the job correctly and completely Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook in a Windows-based environment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: Ability to move safely over uneven and/or slippery terrain or in confined spaces. Physical ability to perform duties while wearing required respiratory equipment (must pass required medical exam); ability to crawl, bend, climb ladders, and lift and carry heavy equipment (40 lbs. or more). * Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of the job.
