The University of Maryland, Baltimore has an opportunity for a Risk Management Specialist to work in the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. The selected candidate is responsible for supporting the International Safety and Security program, Property Loss claims, workers' compensation coverage, and other risk management programs. This role functions as liaison between insurance carriers, third party administrators, brokers, and the University regarding claims reporting and administration. They also monitor workers' compensation, property, auto and general liability claims to ensure proper claims management. The Risk Management Specialist independently anticipates needs and requirements to resolve non-routine matters and will report to the Risk Management Manager.
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is charged with developing and implementing programs to enhance safety at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The department provides consultation and services to research laboratories, clinical areas, facilities, and offices in the areas of chemical, biological, and radioactive materials safety; occupational safety and industrial hygiene; fire safety; environmental and hazardous waste management; risk management and insurance claims management.

Responsible for the administration and analysis of insurance, workers' compensation coverage, and other risk management programs. Functions as liaison between insurance carriers, third party administrators, brokers, and the University regarding claims reporting and administration. Monitors workers' compensation, property, auto and general liability claims to ensure proper claims management.
Supports various risk management projects and initiatives and maintains current knowledge of higher education risk management trends; makes recommendations to ensure best practices. Develops qualitative and quantitative risk exposure and loss reports yielding actionable data.
Coordinate ergonomic assessment requests with the risk consultant for State Employees Risk Management Association.
Works with brokers and underwriters to prepare new and renewal insurance applications, Collects, compiles, and analyzes insurance exposure and underwriting information for various coverages. Escalates difficult claims to settlement or closure as appropriate.
Handles responsibility for internal allocation of insurance costs through the University's billing process and systematic internal financial reporting; reviews and processes insurance premium invoices.
Responds to internal customer's needs by reviewing insurance, indemnification and other requirements in various contracts; advises changes as necessary to conform to policy language.
Oversees fleet safety initiatives and serves on the Vehicle Accident Review Board; maintains authorized driver database.
Coordinates and submits property loss, auto damage, and general liability claims to the State Treasurer's Office. Submits invoices associated with claims to the insurance adjuster for reimbursement or payment. Reconcile financial reports with the appropriate UMB department.
Responds to internal customer's needs by requesting certificates of insurance for contracts, grants, internships or UMB sponsored events.
Obtain necessary information to submit claims history requests to insurance carriers for former students.
Monitor international business travel database and reconcile information in travel tracker to encourage participation in travel alerts to ensure safety and security of travelers.
Monitor travel advisors from Government and Commercial sources to determine if additional actions are required to protect University travelers.
Coordinates and assists with pre-departure safety and security preparedness for travelers visiting high-risk areas.
Gathers information needed to complete workers' compensation claims and submits claims to the University's insurance carrier. Submits invoices and medical records associated with workers' compensation claims to the insurance adjuster.
Reviews accident and injury reports; performs work place safety audits to assist in identifying injury trends. Provides regular updates and/or presentations to campus, as requested, regarding status of claims, injury trends and injury prevention.
Assists Risk Manager in identifying training and/or safety measures necessary to reduce liability exposures.
Prepare and submit wage and leave statements to the workers' compensation insurance carrier.
Acts as resource regarding risk management.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: Three (3) years related experience in workers' compensation, property and casualty insurance, liability insurance and/or risk management. Preferred Licensure/Certification: Certification as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Underwriter (CPCU), and/or Certified Risk Manager is preferred. Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

The Hiring Range for this position is high $50,000s to mid $60,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
