The Workplace Safety Specialist provides support to faculty, students, and staff to help facilitate, assess, and promote a safe and healthy working environment at Brown University. The major responsibilities for this position will be to minimize exposures, prevent injuries and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, RIDOH and other federal, state and local regulations. The Workplace Safety Specialist will implement occupational health & safety programs, conduct comprehensive safety inspections, and provide training. This position will work with faculty, staff and students to resolve regulatory safety and exposure related issues and conduct industrial hygiene monitoring to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. In addition, this position will also be involved with environmental compliance, research safety, fire safety, emergency response team activities and other safety and compliance related projects.
Occupational Health & Safety Program Support
Implement occupational health and safety programs including, but not limited to, Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Machine Safety, Asbestos O&M, Hearing Conservation and all chemical exposure control programs to protect faculty, staff, students and visitors and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.Assist in the implementation of all other OH&S programs as necessary to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Develop, perform and maintain an inspection process that will ensure that employees are working safely, that safety training is effective, and that exposure controls are working properly. Assist departments with job hazard analysis. Review and investigate incidents and accidents. Actively participates in the Union Management Safety Committee and provides support as necessary to resolve agenda items.
Conduct Safety Training â‹
Identify safety training needs. Conduct various safety training programs for faculty, staff and students. Develop safety training for classroom and online training sessions.
Indoor Air Quality Assessments and Industrial Hygiene Monitoring/Testing. â‹
Perform or arrange for indoor air quality assessments and industrial hygiene monitoring as required.Develop sampling protocols to compliment the chemical exposure control programs.Work with department managers & supervisors to resolve exposure issues and recommend corrective actions for exposures.Assist department supervisors in the development of best work practices based on monitoring/testing results.Respond to various â˜odor callsâ™ on campus with appropriate test equipment and help resolve by problem solving, coordination with other departments and communicating with key building occupants.Maintain EHS industrial hygiene equipment.
Emergency Response Team Member â‹
Participate in all required training, respond to emergency situations, participate in on-call rotation, and maintain ability to don a respirator and personal protection equipment, provide technical support to outside responders assess dangerous situations and respond appropriately.Record all incident summaries in the electronic database and follow-up on corrective actions.Maintain respirator and HAZWOPER certification annually.
Miscellaneous EHS Program Support â‹
Provide support to the research safety, fire safety & environmental compliance teams within EHS.Provide assistance with special projects as directed.Provide support for performing inspections, assessments, training, drills, investigations and waste collection.
Bachelor's degree in a science discipline (Safety, Industrial Hygiene,Toxicology, or Engineering preferred) and three (3) years of relevant experience or appropriate combination of education and experience to succeed in the position.
Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.

Good communication, problem solving, organizational and computer skills.
Must be able to wear respiratory protection for emergencies and participation in HAZMAT response.
Must be knowledgeable in calibration and use of industrial hygiene monitoring/testing equipment.
Must be able to access all areas of the University.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height.
Will be required to work with or around hazardous materials including radioactive materials, biological agents, hazardous chemicals and compressed gas.
May need to enter areas where hazardous materials are used or stored in response to small spills up to spills that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) while wearing appropriate PPE as part of emergency response.
Will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment including air-purifying respirators (APR), self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and supplied airline respirator.
Must be able to establish and maintain effective communications with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and visitors and employ supportive methods to achieve the desired results.
Must conduct safety inspections to identify broad range of both regulatory and non-regulatory safety issues including, but not limited to, Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Machine Safety, Electrical Safety, Confined Space, Asbestos, Lead, Mold, etc.
