The Laboratory Safety Services Manager is responsible for providing leadership and senior level technical support to the University in a multi-disciplinary lab safety program. This position manages staff and serves as a Lab Safety Advisor to assigned clients. This position is under the supervision of the Director of Lab Safety Services and will perform duties in a multi-disciplinary Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) environment with strong emphasis on research laboratory safety (biological and chemical safety, occupational safety & health, industrial hygiene and radiation protection).
Manage and provide technical support to Lab Safety Advisors to ensure consistent and excellent service delivery to our clients on the Longwood Campus.
Coach and work with Lab Safety Advisors on professional goals and career-path development.
Performs duties of lab safety advisor for assigned school/department/unit.
Conduct laboratory inspections and compliance reviews of assigned laboratories, research animal facilities, and other support facilities.
Consult with Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on inspection findings and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practice guidance.
Support local Safety Committee initiatives, providing presentations on EH&S programs or other support, as needed.
Member of HMS Safety Committee, LEMT & other Longwood Medical Area committees, as needed, to provide EHS support. Assists schools/departments with committee projects/initiatives.
Maintain and update records of laboratory inspections, internal and external correspondence and investigations.
Working closely with the Biosafety and Radiation Protection Programs, assist clients with strategies for hazard assessment and control.
Implement multi-disciplinary EH&S programs including biological, chemical and physical hazard exposure monitoring, animal experimentation protocols, hazard communication and other program areas.
Monitor completion of required tasks such as inspections, lab permit/registration renewals, regulatory filings and take action (with School, EH&S and Labs) to complete in a timely manner.
Assist in the development, delivery and maintenance of lab safety training programs.
Develop written plans, training modules, policies, guidelines, fact sheets and other communications for chemical, biological, and physical hazards and processes.
Responsible for oversight of lab safety programs as assigned by supervisor.
Take a lead role in enhancing current programs by proactively identifying and assessing areas for improvement and developing a project plan to address needs.
Interpret and maintain proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in environmental health and safety; anticipate and evaluate their impact on clients; communicate requirements to EH&S and client management.
Maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with EH&S staff, Principal Investigators, researchers and clients while actively promoting a culture of safety.
Provide emergency response support (24 hour) throughout the University (on a rotating basis). Emergencies include: biological/blood spill, chemical/oil/waste release, personal injury, fire, etc.
Assist in the response and investigation of laboratory-related accidents or exposures.
Participate in various EH&S teams and projects as needed.
Assist with University wide program development and implementation.

Bachelor's Degree in safety, industrial hygiene, lab safety, environmental science or other related discipline is required, along with relevant experience in the field of laboratory safety. Working knowledge of academic research laboratory processes, equipment and facilities, and ability to communicate complex technical issues to diverse clients. Eligible to work in the US. Minimum 5 to 7 years working as a Lab Safety professional. Candidate is required to participate in 24-hour emergency response activities. Emergency Status Designation: Critical Operations Personnel
Must have collaborative customer service attitude and skills as well as exceptional written and oral communication. Must have ability to work independently and as a team member. Must take initiative, be organized, and be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadline requirements. Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail, are required. Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills. Professional certification or eligibility for certification (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist) desired; Master's degree in relevant field preferred; experience in a University research environment or EH&S program strongly preferred.
