Provide a primarycustomer service contact for Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) andVanderbilt University (VU) researchers, principal investigators, instructorsand staff to ensure the implementation of Chemical and Laboratory SafetyPrograms for research laboratories and assist in the day-to-day safety andcompliance requirements for these laboratories. Manage and provideIndustrial Hygiene services for Vanderbilt employees located in Vanderbiltresearch laboratories and other VUMC buildings.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Chemical Safety, manage and implement a Laboratory Safety Program in accordance with the 29 CFR 1910.1450 (the OSHA Laboratory Standard). This includes developing policies, procedures, and guidance documents to assist all research and teaching laboratories with compliance with the Laboratory Standard. Additionally, provide assistance to labs with hazard analyses, PPE determinations, SOP development, chemical inventories, lab-specific chemical hygiene plans, chemical safety data sheet maintenance, and implementation of safe work practices. The Senior Safety Officer will participate in audits of laboratory research areas to ensure continual compliance the Laboratory Safety Program.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Chemical Safety, manage industrial hygiene activities for VU and VUMC research laboratories and other VUMC buildings and act as a technical lead for industrial hygiene activities. This includes anticipation, investigation, evaluation, and control of potential employee concerns regarding chemical, mold, radon, asbestos, noise, heat / cold stress, or other indoor air quality issues. Direct any industrial hygiene surveys or other hazard assessments performed in the investigation of these issues. Oversee inventory, operation and maintenance of industrial hygiene equipment. Partner with Occupational Health in the evaluation of any employee health and safety concerns regarding these issues.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Chemical Safety, assist with supervision and coordination of a team of three Laboratory Compliance Coordinators (LCCs) for VUMC and VU A&S. In addition to lab compliance responsibilities, the activities of this team include tasks associated with hazardous waste services, biosafety services, and radiation safety services.
With the Assistant Director of Chemical Safety, assist with the development and presentation of Laboratory Safety training for Vanderbilt research faculty, staff, and students including online and in-person training components. Create targeted Lab Safety training materials for specific departments or schools based on activities unique to their operations.
With the Assistant Director of Chemical Safety, help to coordinate and manage activities for established Chemical Safety committees. Provide assistance and act as VEHS contact for departmental safety committees (Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, etc.) with laboratory compliance and industrial hygiene issues.
Act as a lead member of the VEHS hazardous materials response team. Provide coordination, instruction, and industrial hygiene support during hazardous chemical spills and other HazMat activities. Provide respiratory fit-testing for HazMat team and other research staff as directed by Occupational Health.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Chemical Safety and Assistant Director of Biosafety, help to prepare and participate in reverification surveys for BSL-3 laboratories. Assist with the issuance of formal reports to ensure compliance with National Institute of Health (NIH) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.
Manage a laboratory fume hood certification program to provide a systematic approach to ensuring Vanderbilt fume hoods are operating within established parameters. This also involves coordinating with Vanderbilt maintenance facilities to implement corrective actions for deficiencies.
Act as VEHS contact for Space and Facilities Planning for laboratory-related projects and other construction projects where industrial hygiene issues are involved (asbestos, radon, mold, etc.)
Liaison with VEHS chemical waste management, radiation safety, and biological safety sections for all lab set-ups, relocations, or close-outs.
Assist with the design and implementation of VEHS Hub (Bioraft) and other software packages to track and report safety and compliance information for laboratories (chemical inventory information, audit information, safety equipment).
Utilize team-based approach with other VEHS staff in implementing programs.
Direct supervision of threeVEHS safety officers. Indirect supervision of students, interns,consultants, and vendors.
Manage budget forIndustrial Hygiene surveys and monitoring equipment. Track expendituresagainst budget. Prepare necessary documentation for supervisory approval.
Frequent contact withall levels of administration, faculty, and staff including the presentation ofinformation where detailed explanation is required to obtain cooperation andapproval. Deliver stand up training presentations to groups up to 100 people.
Frequent contactwith consultants, vendors, and regulatory agencies as needed. Potentialfor contact with the general public as VUMC representative for hazardouschemical or industrial hygiene matters.
Frequent contactwith graduate students and students as interns and in laboratories.
A degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene,Occupational Health and Safety, or related field.
Five years direct experience in industrialhygiene and/or research laboratory program development are required.
Applicant must possess excellent written andverbal communication skills for effective report writing, training, and consulting.
Applicant must be fully capable of usingadvanced functions within Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook, andAccess. Applicant should be able to create training presentations withinMicrosoft Powerpoint, complex data spreadsheets within Excel, and publicitydocuments within Word or similar software without assistance.
Must be able to be pass respirator fit-testingand hazardous materials medical surveillance exam.
Must beable to effectively function as member of VEHS hazardous materials responseteam.
Academic laboratory safety experience
Certification as an Industrial Hygienist (CIH)or Safety Professional (CSP)
Position requires entryinto areas where biological and infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, andionizing radiation may be used.
