The Chemical/Lab Operations & Safety Specialist develops and supports all chemical and laboratory safety programs and policies that ensure compliance with a variety of regulations as related to the safety of the School of Natural Sciences and Allied Health Sciences environment. This position manages the chemical stockroom(s) and inventories that serve the School of Natural Sciences and Allied Health Sciences. The Chemical/Lab Operations & Safety Specialist will perform highly technical and complex safety and health work in education laboratories in support of laboratory health and safety programs. The person in this position will serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the School of Natural Sciences and Allied Health Sciences. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position. The Chemical/Lab Operations & Safety Specialist will report directly to the Dean of the School of Natural Sciences & Allied Health Sciences.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience, qualifications and abilities, including:
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Natural Science or related field and 1-2 years successful safety and chemical hygiene experience in a laboratory environment. A Master’s degree is preferred. DOT, OSHA, and/or HAZWOPER certifications are preferred.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the principles of laboratory practices related to the recognition, control and elimination of chemical-related physical and health hazards.
Demonstrated experience identifying, communicating, and controlling bio-chemical and chemical reactions, biological and chemical compatibility and handling issues, and bio- and chemical-packaging and shipping regulations.
Ability to think critically and seek solutions which result in mutually beneficial outcomes.
Ability to conduct effective quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments for complex laboratory operations.
General knowledge in laboratory ventilation and laboratory building design; electrical safety; high pressure systems; hazardous gas delivery systems and controls; bio-chemical, biological, and chemical synthesis and reactive chemistry.
Knowledge of current and specific regulatory guidance and standards and ability to develop and update School of Natural Sciences and Allied Health Sciences to maintain compliance and best practice. The ability to represent the School of Natural Sciences and Allied Health Sciences in the event of a regulatory inspection with the agencies named.
Demonstrated excellent relevant written and verbal communication skills.
A tolerance for ambiguity and a willingness to manage diverse and frequently changing assignments, particularly the ability to do so with a positive attitude and a sense of humor in a high-task environment.
