Vanderbilt Environmental Healthand Safety (VEHS) mission is to partner with the VUMC/VU community tofacilitate and promote safety, health and environmental protection. VEHSaccomplishes this task by providing expertise in the following EH&Stechnical disciplines: radiation safety; occupational safety, emergencypreparedness; industrial hygiene; fire and life safety; training; hazardousmaterials management; and biological safety.
Vanderbilt Environmental Healthand Safety (VEHS) department provides Vanderbilt University Medical Center(VUMC) with the necessary consultation and technical resources to supportregulatory and accreditation compliance efforts in the areas of safety, andhealth. VEHS also provides consultative and safety support services toVanderbilt University (VU) on a contractual basis.
To provide healthphysics support for clinical and research activities at VUMC and VU involvingionizing radiation.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide health physicssupport for radiation therapy patient program
Lead the decontaminationof radiation therapy rooms
Perform audits ofclinical and research areas
Review researchprotocols and perform hazard assessment for these protocols
Assist with radiationsafety databases
Develop standardoperating procedures for health physics activities
Develop and deliverradiation safety-related training as needed
Assist with theradiation dosimetry monitoring program
Assist with X-rayinspection program
Assist with theradioactive waste program
Other duties as assigned
Nodirect reports. Indirect supervision of technicians, students, andconsultants.
Frequentcontact with all levels of administration, faculty, and staff including thepresentation of information where detailed explanation is required to obtaincooperation.
Frequentcontact with consultants and vendors.
Frequentcontact with patients and students.
Beable to lift 50 lbs. Ability to pass respirator fit-testing requirements.
Personsin this position will frequent areas where potential exposure to biological andinfectious agents, hazardous chemicals, and ionizing radiation may occur. Some work outside normal business hours will be required on occasion.
A Bachelorâs degree inhealth physics, physics, chemistry, biology, or a related field and two yearsdirect experience in health physics or a Masterâs degree inhealth physics, physics, chemistry, biology, or a related field.
Experience should be in a research university,healthcare, or similar setting.
Equivalent combination of experience andeducation accepted.
Ability to obtaincertification from the American Board of Health Physics.
