Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Health Safety Specialist I for IP&O – Environment Health and Safety. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of environmental, health and safety programs for all University locations, including experiment stations, to be carried out without adverse safety and health effects on faculty, staff students, visitors and surrounding public and in accordance with federal, state and local regulations, professional practice and University policy and procedures.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Develops necessary programs to assure the university activities do not endanger the environment and comply with all relevant regulations.
Continually assures that the quality and depth of services are adequate to meet program objectives.
Interacts with all members of the University community to eliminate and/or reduce risks and to assess value of programs and services.
Submits required environmental permits, applications, annual/biannual reports and other correspondence, as required.
Acts as a University representative for interaction with federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
Responds to emergencies, releases, as needed, and serves as primary incident manager as it relates to environmental damage.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree preferably in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, or Hazardous Waste Management.
A minimum of 5 years of related experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability, experience, judgement and maturity to carry out all departmental responsibilities without supervision and to interact effectively with regulatory authorities
Excellent communication skills, both orally and written
Excellent time management skills to routinely deal with multiple issues and activities
Excellent managerial skills and ability to manage staff
Professional certification (CSP, CIH, CHMM, CHP) or the education, training and experience sufficient to become certified in the EH&S profession.
Scientific training in the physical, chemical or life sciences.
Must have thorough knowledge of environmental regulations (federal, state, local), be able to develop contracts, manage contractors, and kept abreast of remediation technologies.
Position requires the educational and technical expertise to implement and carry out a broad range of environmental activities that must include a comprehensive knowledge of subject matter, practical applications including new technologies and remedial techniques, experience in these areas and the ability to independently make these determinations.
Master's Degree or completion of a graduate level program in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, or Hazardous Waste Management is preferred.
Prefers seven (7) years of practical work experience.
Ability to use a PC, Word, Excel, PPT
Other EH&S software programs and databases
Must have knowledge of the operation and functions of sampling equipment
