This position will providedirect customer support to Vanderbilt University Medical Center hospitals andassociated clinics.
This position will beresponsible for direct supervision of one employee and the associated program ârespirator fit testing.
This position will work directlywith the Assistant Director and other section staff to assist the facility inmaintaining compliance with the standards promulgated by the Joint Commission,CAP, OSHA/TOSHA, TDEC, EPA and other applicable regulatory and accreditingagencies.
Direct supervision ofone staff member and that individualâs primary duties:
Safety Tech 3 â Respirator fit testing.
Assists in the development and implementation of safety policies/procedures, safety education, and hazard surveillance programs for Vanderbilt Medical Center and on- and off-site associated clinics.
Assists with responsibility for the overall fire/safety plan in the hospitals and clinics. Assists with fire drills and emergency preparedness drills within the VUMC hospitals and clinics
Performs hazardous materials monitoring (environmental and personal monitoring) and communicates results to applicable managers. Provides follow-up for corrective action plans.
Performs Indoor Air Quality evaluations using standard assessment tools, reporting results to applicable managers.
Assists with the VUMC Respiratory Protection Program. Applicable duties include fit testing, training, data entry, as needed.
Participates on various associated committees, subcommittees and task forces by appointment; provides recommendations and assists with corrective actions.
Assists with responsibility for the overall fire/safety/emergency preparedness plans for hospital and clinic areas, with emphasis on the off-site clinics and One Hundred Oaks.
Works collaboratively with other VEHS staff, Facilities Management, Environmental Services and other key departments to assist 100 Oaks and off-site clinics in meeting federal, state and local requirements, Joint Commission and OSHA/TOSHA standards.
Conducts safety audits for the hospitals and associated clinics, including off-site clinics. Reports results of audits to the department managers with recommendations for correction. Documents and maintains audit records for the Medical Center Safety Committee and regulatory agencies.
Provides technical assistance and support to various hospital departments in the development, review, and evaluation of departmental-level safety programs.
Presents departmentally specific safety information and training for new employees and re-training for current employees as required.
Participates in Emergency Preparedness and response activities to include training activities, drills and plan activations.
Carries the VEHS 24-hr emergency pager in a rotation that includes all exempt staff for on-campus emergencies.
Assists clinic personnel in the proper identification, handling, storage and disposal of chemical, biological, radiological, and compressed gas hazards.
Participates in regulatory inspections as needed.
Provides VEHS support for the construction safety program; participating in construction safety surveys, project permitting, policy development, training, and problem resolution.
Responds to emergencies as appropriate for training and assignment within VEHS and needs of the organization.
Other duties relevant to the Hospital/Clinic Safety and Training Program, as assigned.
Internal: Frequent contact with all levels ofadministration, faculty, staff, students, visitors and patients including thepresentation of information where detailed explanation is required to obtaincooperation.
External: Frequent contact with consultants and vendors.
Be able to lift 50lbs. Must be willing and able to wear required personal protectiveequipment including protective clothing and gloves, eye/face protection, and,in some cases, negative pressure respiratory protection. Limited compensatedtravel to VUMC clinics.
Position requires entry into areas where biological and infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, and ionizing radiation may be used.
Position requires limited local travel to Vanderbilt associated off-campus clinics.
Position involves minimal after-hour and weekend work associated with completion of off-shift drills and industrial hygiene monitoring.

Applicant must possessexcellent written and verbal communication skills for effective report writing,training, and consulting. Must be familiar with common computer programsincluding, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.
Bachelors plus 5 yearsexperience or Masters plus 2 years experience in environmental engineering, publichealth, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-relatedfield of study (i.e. chemistry) is required. Experience in healthcare-relatedsafety preferred. Equivalent combination of experience and educationaccepted. The ideal candidate will possess general safetyexpertise and excellent communication skills.
Not required butsafety/Industrial Hygiene related certification preferred. But, must be willingto work towards and obtain certification.
