The responsibility of the Fire Safety Officer is to provide oversight and management of the University's Occupational Health and Fire Life Safety programs. The position serves as the departmental lead and point of contact for the Higher Education Opportunity Act, internal and external inquiries involving the occupational health, life safety, and hazard communication to ensure compliance with all applicable local and federal laws and regulations. This position will provide support for the indoor air quality, pollution minimization, hazardous waste disposal programs, and other safety activities, as needed. The position is responsible for responding to, processing and completing service requests from the University community and external stakeholders for various safety services aimed at minimizing risk and reducing institutional losses.
Implements required Occupational and Safety and Health programs across the University to include OSHA 1910 and 1926 requirements.
Develops and maintains University Occupational Safety and Health Programs and provides advice and assistance in the resolution of difficult program management and administrative operation problems and/or issues that include significant controversies or difficulties that present barriers to program delivery and application.
Supports the review and approval of University contractor/service provider safety programs. Reviews design submittals presented by consultants; evaluates, and makes recommendations for acceptance based upon compliance with applicable standards and regulations. .
Provides guidance on appropriate OSHA, EPA and Lab Safety regulations and procedures.
Performs ergonomic analyses in the course of developing Job Hazard Analysis and developing corrective actions following job related injuries.
Investigates all accidents, injuries and similar incidents and prepares written reports and evaluations using standard guidelines. Appropriately reports high profile incidents and related risks to leadership in a timely fashion. Actively maintains and distributes core Occupational Health and Safety metrics.
Serves as the University's Fire Marshal and assumes institutional responsibility for all fire and safety programs to comply with NFPA 101requirements. Creates and administers the University's Fire Safety program and maintains documents to support effective program operations and compliance e.g. Higher Education Opportunity Act.
Develops and implements fire protection programs and procedures to ensure employee,student and facility safety in accordance with all city, state and federal fire and life safety codes. Responsible for directing all activities associated with the fire safety programs and assessing fire protection systems and life safety implications in university facilities.
Maintains key program data points including scheduling and conducting fire drills, identifying fire safety hazards and fire safety statistics.
Performs outreach with students and department representatives to develop student and employee fire safety awareness.
Responsible for responding to environmental health and safety issues and complaints.
Responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies for the Safety and Environmental Management office to support fire, environmental health and safety and other university-wide programs.
Identifies University's safety training needs and develops occupational health & fire safety training programs to proactively address university risks and needs.
Other duties as assigned.
5 years of experience administering Occupational Health Safety programs, and/or 5 years of experience Fire and Life Safety programs
Proficiency in Microsoft Access Database, Excel and Word
Ability to produce management reports and data
