Posting Summary: The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Industrial Hygienist/Environmental Inspector. The successful candidate will be expected to monitor asbestos and lead activities, perform asbestos and lead inspections, analyze air samples collected during asbestos activities, and maintain all related documents. Off-hours and weekend work are required. Responsibilities will also include assisting the Industrial Hygiene division with indoor air quality and safety related support when needed.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to safety in the workplace; have strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; and have a strong knowledge of pertinent regulatory requirements. Preferred candidates will have a minimum of 7 years' experience in the field. Successful candidates will work well in a team, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University community.

Preferred Specific Degree/Training: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Occupational Health, Science, Engineering or a related field.
Past experience in construction trades, environmental inspections (including asbestos, lead, and mold), and audits and management planning. Past experience in asbestos, lead, or mold training. Past experience in NIOSH 582 airborne asbestos sampling and analysis.
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Extensive - 7 years plus
Required Specific Experience: Past experience in supervising or monitoring asbestos abatement activities and/or lead activities
Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required License or Certification: Valid, unrestricted Virginia Driver's License with a positive driving record or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Preferred License or Certification: Virginia State Licensure as an Asbestos Project Designer; Asbestos Inspector, Abatement Project Monitor, Lead Inspector or Risk Assessor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have excellent organizational skills necessary for proper maintenance of program and associated recordkeeping requirements
Computer skills necessary for various forms, documents and database management
Must possess strong communication skills with the ability to communicate and write effectively, facilitating interaction with other employees with a focus on customer service
Ability to adhere to confidential handling of sensitive information
Problem solving skills
Ability to perform accurate field measurements, data calculations, results interpretation and transcribe values into a database.
Demonstrate a level of mechanical aptitude and keen observation.

Be motivated to accomplish work responsibilities both independently and as an EHS team member.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Significant knowledge in building construction and design, how to read and understand construction documents and drawings, knowledge about the historical use of hazardous building materials, visual skills and the ability to develop clear and accurate reports of inspection results
Required Computer Applications: Competent in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, managing spreadsheets and databases, and experience with online research for the identification of technical resources.
