Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant Emergency Manager. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Senior Vice President for University Services at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service. Responsibilities of this position include assisting in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness programs through interactions with ISU students, faculty and staff as well as the surrounding communities; developing emergency exercises, implementing engaging training programs; and managing inspection data and safety surveys. This position will work with campus clients to analyze emergency planning needs, evaluate workplace exposures and recommend plans and procedures to improve preparedness while minimizing potential safety and health hazards. Other responsibilities include participation in campus safety programs, after-action reporting, safety inspections, program compliance audits, and development and administration of emergency preparedness training. The successful candidate will possess excellent oral and written communication skills to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of clients regarding compliance assistance, ability to provide training, create reports and recommendations. Outstanding organizational skills and strong attention to detail will be essential for success. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use personal computers along with a variety of software to maintain hazardous materials information and related reports.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Biology/Molecular/Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Occupational Safety/Health, Health Physics, or related field.
Technical training covering OSHA, EPA, NFPA or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards.
Experience developing and administering safety training.
Experience with spreadsheets and relational databases.
Experience working at a college, university or research institution.
Demonstrated experience applying safety and/or emergency preparedness programs for the workplace.
