The Office of Enterprise Risk Services is seeking an Occupational Safety Officer. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Chief Risk Officer.
Within Enterprise Risk Services, Environmental Health and Safety’s mission is to foster a safe and healthful environment for the OSU community. EH&S’ goal is to partner with the OSU community to protect human health and the environment, ensure regulatory compliance, and to preserve University interests and assets. The results of this program affect the entire University student body, faculty, and staff.
The Occupational Safety Officer will implement the Campus’ occupational safety and ergonomics programs within EH&S; Provide departments with environmental health and safety consultation and service; Provide timely, cost effective, and professional safety services that enhance the teaching, research, and public service goals of the University; Develop the policies and procedures, monitor compliance with these policies and other regulations affecting the University.
This position is responsible for several distinct program areas within the University’s Environmental Health & Safety Department that deal with occupational safety and ergonomics. This position functions independently and has complete responsibility for the development of procedures and performance for the programs it administers. The position also requires interaction with faculty, staff, and students, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies and making decisions that affect the University.

(60%) OCCUPATIONALSAFETYOFFICER: Manage the University’s statewide Occupational Safety Program. Duties include program management and development of occupational safety programs, review and development of University Safety Policies and Procedures, liaison for the University during OSHA facility inspections, tracking accident reports, conducting accident investigations, working to abate occupational hazards, and filing reports. Serves as a member of the University Health & Safety Committee (UHSC) and includes effectively communicating occupational health-related issues to faculty, staff, and students. Coordinates committee meetings and oversees the agenda. Provide assistance to OSU Human Resources and Risk Management Departments in occupational health issues, coordinate with University’s workers compensation insurance carrier on worker follow-up, and assists other OSU Safety Committees and organizations in the development of their safety programs. Subprogram areas can include all aspects of occupational safety often found within shop, construction, agricultural, laboratory, and office working environments.
(15%) DEPARTMENTSAFETYADVISOR and EH&S AUDITS: Assist departments in implementing the OSU Safety Management Program and other health and safety programs. Assistance includes, but is not limited to, performing audits, assessing hazards, investigating reports of unsafe conditions, conducting safety training, and developing safety documents.
(10%) SUPERVISION of occupational safety staff, including hiring, planning, assigning, scheduling work, reviewing work, ensuring quality standards and productivity; Perform quality assurance checks on assessments performed.
(5%) ERGONOMICS: This position manages the University’s ergonomic program and serves as the campus ergonomic coordinator; the position requires working with faculty, staff, and students in addition to Human Resources, off-campus facilities, and the University’s workers compensation insurance carrier. Major duties include managing the ergonomic evaluation program, and conducting training presentations to on-campus and off-campus faculty and staff.
(5%) On-Call response, hazardous materials response, and response to emergency events. Any administrative responsibilities including but not limited to becoming familiar with all construction standards, standard operating procedures, policies and practices, follow all business rules, standard operating procedures, and administrative practices.
(5%) Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions/Work Schedule:
Typical schedule is M-F 8am – 5pm; with some after-hours work during inclement weather, emergencies, or other University work curtailments or closures.
This position supports essential functions of Environmental Health & Safety and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures. The incumbent will be contacted by their direct supervisor or unit leadership daily for extended University delays or closures to determine if they are required to report to work.
Work environment is varied and includes, but is not limited to work within laboratories, field, office, animal facilities, hazardous waste storage facilities, cleanup sites, shops, industrial and construction sites, or over water.
Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Public Health, or another field in the physical sciences AND three or more years experience in implementing environmental health & safety policies and procedures, conducting health & safety assessments, writing guidance documents, and providing health & safety consulting to laboratory and non-laboratory staff.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OAR 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications: Supervision of staff within a university setting.
