The Senior Director, Environment of Care and Safety is responsible for the environment of care, safety management and risk management for Carilion Clinic facilities, including hospitals, clinics, medical offices and community hospitals, and supports the coordination, development, implementation and monitoring of environment of care (EOC), safety management and risk management operations based on identified needs, guidelines, regulatory standards, policies and established goals. This includes the promulgation, implementation and evaluation of all programs, policies and procedures necessary to comply with applicable Federal, State, and Joint Commission requirements and best practices. The Senior Director, Environment of Care and Safety proactively develops, implements, coordinates and monitors safety related education, processes, and serves as the Carilion Clinic Safety Officer and subject matter expert.
This position requires regular communications with multiple work teams and work groups including the Environment of Care Team, Safety Tea m, and administrative personnel as well as physicians, attorneys, vendors, regulators, community citizens and other customers. The Senior Director, Environment of Care and Safety will provide problem-solving, consultative, advisory and interpretive services to others, and the reach of this work extends beyond the immediate department. The incumbent will benefit from strong analytical skills to aid in the collection of information from diverse sources, application of professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarization of the information and data in order to solve problems or design the necessary complex systems and programs required while being mindful that these systems and programs cross department and divisional lines.

Master’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field is required.
Five or more years of leadership experience in an enterprise healthcare setting providing services related to the environment of care as identified by The Joint Commission required. Additional experience in fire, security, or safety management is desirable. Advanced working knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to occupational safety, health and hazardous waste management.
Hazmat/HAZWOPER, NEHA, HEM, CHSP or other national level credentials preferred
Other Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess a driving record within the scope of Carilion’s Driver Regulations. Must possess strong interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and decision making skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
