General Statement of Duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities, the Assistant Director of Sustainability and EH&S develops a coherent, campus wide sustainability and environment, health and safety program. The Assistant Director of Sustainability and EH&S promotes a culture ?of sustainability and safety among the greater university community and its external stakeholders; identifies and prioritizes areas ?for university wide sustainability efforts; plans and develops? programs; engages and collaborates with ?university administration, faculty, staff and students to enhance campus sustainability and safety efforts. Serves as a point person for sustainability activities, transportation, waste minimization, recycling, environmental stewardship, energy conservation and EH&S.
As authorized by the Assistant Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities, coordinates and works in a collaborative manner? with external constituencies such as the state, federal, city of Salem, regional planning boards, and others; charges, provides guidance and ?supports the activities of the Sustainability Task Force.? In addition, the Sustainability and EH&S Coordinator has the responsibility? for identifying grant opportunities and funding, corporate and civic partnerships, and programs that promote campus? sustainability efforts. The University is a member of Second Nature and is a signatory to the Carbon Commitment.
The Assistant Director of Sustainability and EH&S is also responsible for overseeing the safe handling, storage, and delivery of chemicals and other potentially hazardous substances on the campus. The successful incumbent is responsible for compliance with a variety of Federal, state, local and University regulations. The Assistant Director works in close collaboration with other University departments to insure that safety standards are maintained. The Assistant Director manages the campus chemical inventory, maintains detailed data and records, and develops campus procedures for delivery and storage of chemicals.
